Yorkshire CND The
Menwith Hill spy base (previously referred to as the 13th USASA Field Station),
near Harrogate in North Yorkshire, England, is run by the National Security
Agency (NSA) of the United States. It employs over 1800 staff, mainly American,
who are ordered never to mention the NSA and to report all contacts with foreign
nationals (including the local British!). The NSA was set up by Presidential
decree in 1952 without any debate in the US Congress. The American people
know very little about it and they know even less about Menwith Hill.
ECHELON IN THE LATE 1980'S, IN A DECISION IT PROBABLY REGRETS, THE U.S. PROMPTED NEW ZEALAND TO JOIN A NEW AND HIGHLY SECRET GLOBAL INTELLIGENCE SYSTEM. HAGER'S INVESTIGATION INTO IT AND HIS DISCOVERY OF THE ECHELON DICTIONARY HAS REVEALED ONE OF THE WORLD'S BIGGEST, MOST CLOSELY HELD INTELLIGENCE PROJECTS. THE SYSTEM ALLOWS SPY AGENCIES TO MONITOR MOST OF THE WORLD'S TELEPHONE, E-MAIL, AND TELEX COMMUNICATIONS.
