The Hum and the Ionosphere
On the 10 May 2006 at 18.00 GMT with the passing of a thunder storm directly overhead, an opportunity arose to confirm that the Hum voltages obtained from the walls of buildings are intimately connected to the ionosphere.
Note that the readings obtained are referred to as Hum voltages as it is no longer appropriate to refer to them as signal or transmissions.
The figure left shows the voltage obtained with a 10 cm square of metal foil in contact with a wall at the height of 6 meters. The readings clearly show the approach of the storm and the point at which rain began to fall.
The approach of a second front can also be seen.
While making these readings lightning strikes were observed but it was not possible to show these on the present graph.
